Del Monte, the third largest marketer of bananas in the world has come up with its latest marketing effort; selling single bananas in individually-wrapped biodegradable plastic packages
The move is baffling and many are pointing out the obvious; bananas already come in their own perfect biodegradable wrap. It's called a peel. So why add the packaging?
Convenience of course — the new snack will come along with the slogan, "Natural Energy Snack on the Go." It will be sold in convenience stores, gas stations, gyms and leisure centres.
For their part, Del Monte claims the packaging is actually a "green" choice. The bag the banana will be sold in contains "Controlled Ripening Technology" (CRT), which extends the shelf-life of the banana by several days. Producers put green bananas in the bag and the fruit ripens at a perfect and slow pace; preferable to being left to ripen in open air.
